The Wolcott community is mourning the sudden death of Kacy J. Cunningham, 43, who was killed Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle crash on State Road 18 in Benton County.
According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal collision occurred shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2026, on westbound State Road 18 at County Road 1200 East.
The crash occurred within an Indiana Department of Transportation construction zone, where traffic was being controlled by a flagger.
Investigators said Cunningham was driving a car and had stopped as directed by the INDOT flagger when her vehicle was struck from behind by a pickup truck.
The pickup was driven by Jacob A. Morris, 39, of Peru, Indiana. The force of the collision left Cunningham fatally injured.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but Cunningham was pronounced dead at the location of the crash.
A passenger in Cunningham’s vehicle, Nathan P. Christner, 40, of Wolcott, was also found unconscious following the collision. He was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Authorities had not immediately released information regarding the extent of his injuries.
Morris was evaluated at the scene but reportedly declined medical treatment.
The crash prompted a significant emergency response along State Road 18. The roadway remained closed for more than two hours as investigators documented evidence, examined the vehicles and worked to reconstruct the events leading to the deadly collision.
The Indiana State Police crash reconstruction team assisted local authorities with the investigation.
News of Cunningham’s death has brought sadness to Wolcott and surrounding communities. Her sudden passing has left family members, friends and others who knew her facing the difficult reality of losing someone unexpectedly.
Those closest to Kacy are now left to remember her life and the moments they shared with her while supporting one another through the grief.
