The Northview Heights community is mourning after two people were found fatally shot inside an apartment on Hazlett Street Wednesday morning, August 12, 2026.
The victims were identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office as Shaelynn Maria Moore, 30, of Brighton Heights, and Mark Allen Jones, 24, of Northview Heights.
The deadly shooting occurred in the 100 block of Hazlett Street. Pittsburgh police were initially dispatched shortly after 9 a.m. following a two-round ShotSpotter alert. While officers were responding, additional calls were received reporting that a shooting had occurred inside an apartment.
When officers arrived, they discovered a man and woman deceased on the second floor of the residence.
The discovery prompted a major investigation, with detectives and crime-scene personnel securing the apartment and documenting evidence as they worked to determine what led to the fatal shooting.
Among the most disturbing aspects of the incident was the presence of four children inside the apartment when the shooting occurred. The children, ages 11, 9, 7 and 7, were not physically injured.
Authorities said the children were taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital as a precaution and were expected to undergo forensic interviews as investigators work to understand what they may have witnessed.
Investigators recovered multiple shell casings at the scene. Police said evidence indicated that at least some of the gunfire occurred outside the apartment before the shooting continued inside.
Authorities also received information suggesting that a domestic altercation may have preceded the shooting. However, investigators had not established the exact relationship between Moore and Jones or determined precisely what happened immediately before the gunfire.
That uncertainty remains a key part of the investigation.
Police have considered the possibility of a murder-suicide, but officials initially stressed that the investigation remained active and did not publicly confirm the manner of death at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remained under investigation in the latest information available.
The shooting has left Northview Heights residents shaken, particularly given the presence of children inside the home during the violence.
As detectives continue gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses, Moore and Jones’ deaths are being mourned by those who knew them. The investigation is expected to provide additional answers about the events that led to the tragedy.
For now, authorities are focused on establishing the full sequence of events and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the deaths are thoroughly examined.
