A major police operation at Sylvia Park Shopping Centre ended tragically Thursday afternoon after an armed man fleeing police was shot and killed while carrying a long-barrelled air rifle.
The incident began at approximately 2 p.m. on August 13, 2026, after police received information about the alleged theft of an air rifle from Gun City in Penrose.
According to Auckland City District Police Commander Superintendent Sunny Patel, the man allegedly fled the area in a vehicle, prompting police units and the Eagle helicopter to begin tracking him.
Police Eagle located a white Suzuki Swift near Sylvia Park and monitored the vehicle as it travelled toward the Pakuranga area. The vehicle entered the car park at Pakuranga Plaza but quickly left and continued along the Pakuranga Highway toward Panmure.
Police said the vehicle was being driven erratically as officers attempted to intercept it. Road spikes were subsequently deployed as the vehicle continued toward Panmure and the Mount Wellington Highway.
The pursuit eventually came to an end when the vehicle became stranded at an intersection outside Sylvia Park Shopping Centre.
At approximately 2:50 p.m., the man reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot while carrying the long-barrelled air rifle.
He ran onto the Sylvia Park grounds and headed toward an entrance to the shopping centre as police officers pursued him.
Superintendent Patel said officers confronted the man underneath an overpass at the shopping centre while he was still in possession of the air rifle. Police subsequently fired at him.
First aid was provided immediately at the scene, but the man was later pronounced deceased.
The shooting prompted a significant emergency response at Sylvia Park as police secured the area and began establishing what had occurred during the confrontation.
Police have launched a critical incident investigation into the shooting. Such an investigation will examine the circumstances leading up to the police use of firearms and the events surrounding the man’s death.
The incident has caused significant disruption and concern at one of Auckland’s major shopping destinations, with members of the public and businesses affected by the police operation.
